TILLVÄXT
Saltvik, Härnösand, 2024
Material: Steel, Jesmonite, solarpanels, lights.
Public art commission for Härnösands kommun, Sweden.
TILLVÄXT (Growth) is a new public artwork for the new commercial and industrial area in Saltvik, Härnösand. The artwork is first "on site" and the area will grow around this "thing". The project made me think about the word growth, it's history and how we use it today. A word that comes from nature but is now mostly associated with finance. Ironically, financial growth often comes with a cost; the decrease of the natural world.
Like a feather that has been hiding and contacting in the ground, the gestalt finally stretches it’s body. Stones and gravel are pushed to the sides as the spiralformed logg rises to the sky. TILLVÄXT is a sculpture where technology imitates and cooperate with nature. The spiralform looks like a pine with bark but it’s precise spiralform is somewhat of a riddle, did nature or man made this?
There is a lightbulb screwed into the top end. Solarpanels centers the bulb like a bud that is about to burst. The artwork is a eco futuristic utopia where nature and technology cooperate in a artificial photosynthesis that lights up Saltvik at dusk.
